What Happens in Couples Counselling?

Couples counselling gives you both a safe and confidential space to talk about what is happening in your relationship.

My role is not to decide who is right or wrong. I work with both of you to understand the patterns that have developed between you, how those patterns affect the relationship, and what each of you needs.

During sessions we might explore communication, repeated arguments, trust, emotional distance, intimacy, resentment, parenting, stress, life changes or differences in how you both experience the relationship.

Sometimes one person wants to talk immediately while the other needs more time to process. Sometimes one partner feels ignored while the other feels criticised. Counselling helps slow these conversations down so you can understand what is happening underneath the argument.

The aim is not to create a perfect relationship. The aim is to help you understand each other better, communicate more openly and make informed choices about your relationship.

My Approach

I work in an integrative and humanistic way, drawing from Person-Centred, Gestalt and Existential approaches.

This means I do not use the same formula with every couple.

I take time to understand both of you as individuals as well as the relationship you have created together.

I aim to provide a space where both partners feel heard and respected. I do not take sides or place blame.

We might explore what happens during conflict, how each of you communicates your needs, the emotions underneath repeated arguments, personal experiences that influence the relationship, and what you both want moving forward.

At times, I might slow a conversation down and help you notice what is happening between you in the moment. This often helps couples recognise patterns that happen automatically at home.

My role is to help you understand those patterns and find healthier ways of responding to each other.

ADHD, Neurodivergence and Relationships

Neurodivergence often influences the way couples communicate, organise their everyday lives, process emotions, and understand each other.

ADHD and autism do not automatically cause relationship problems. Difficulties often develop when differences are misunderstood.

For example, one partner might forget something important because of difficulties with memory or attention.

Their partner might experience this as:

“You do not care about me.”

The neurodivergent partner might experience repeated reminders as:

“You think I am useless.”

Both people end up hurt.

Neurodivergent relationships might involve differences around:

Communication, Emotional regulation, Organisation, Time management, Household responsibilities, Sensory needs, Social needs, Intimacy, Conflict, Routine, Need for space, Executive functioning, Feeling criticised or rejected

My approach is neurodivergent-affirming.

Rather than asking one partner to become more like the other, we explore how your differences affect the relationship and what helps both of you feel understood.

ADHD or autism might explain certain difficulties, but they do not remove responsibility. Equally, neurodivergent traits should not be treated as evidence that someone is lazy, selfish or uncaring.

The aim is understanding rather than blame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to be married to have couples counselling?

No. Couples counselling is available to people in different types of relationships. You might be married, living together, dating, engaged or in a long-term partnership.

Will you take sides?

No. My role is to work with both of you. I aim to help each person feel heard while exploring what is happening within the relationship.

What if one of us is unsure about counselling?

This is common. You do not both need to feel equally confident about starting. The free consultation gives you both an opportunity to meet me and see how the process feels before committing.

Do you work with ADHD and neurodivergent couples?

Yes. I have a particular interest in ADHD and neurodivergence. I work with couples where one or both partners are neurodivergent, whether formally diagnosed or exploring this part of themselves.

What if we keep having the same argument?

Repeated arguments often have deeper emotional patterns underneath them. Counselling helps slow those conversations down so we can understand what each person is experiencing and what keeps the pattern going.

Do you work with trust issues?

Yes. Couples counselling might help when trust has been affected by betrayal, secrecy, broken promises, repeated conflict or emotional distance.

Do you help couples thinking about separation?

Yes. You do not need to know whether you want to stay together before starting counselling. My role is not to persuade you to stay together or separate. The work helps you understand what each of you wants.

How many sessions will we need?

There is no fixed number. Some couples want support around one specific issue, while others need more time to explore long-standing patterns. We review the work together as counselling progresses.

Do you offer online couples counselling?

Yes. I offer online couples counselling across the UK as well as face-to-face sessions in Swansea.

Is couples counselling confidential?

Yes. Couples counselling is confidential within the boundaries of the BACP Ethical Framework. I explain confidentiality and its limits before we begin working together.
